Gone are the days when children used to play with good old-fashioned puzzle games. Of course, that being said, those puzzle games do still exist and they are slowly finding their way back into the hearts of many families. Put simply, these puzzles are just the safest and best replacements for all the violent video games that are being put out in the market. So if you are a parent seeking out a puzzle game for your child while he's still young and willing to learn, here are some that will definitely keep him or her busy. • Mastermind – This game is certainly a good one as it requires two players. It's more or less a code-breaking game and it involves the use of colored pegs on a board with 12 rows. One additional row is shielded so that the one decoding cannot see the actual code. Now, the player who makes the code does so by making a sequence of colored pegs. There are 6 colors of pegs to choose from and only 4 holes for the code. The decoder then must figure out what that sequence is by using the 12 rows. The one who makes the code will show the progress with key pegs, which are black and white. The black pegs indicate a wrong code and the white pegs indicate correct codes. • Rubiks Cube – The Rubiks Cube is definitely one of the more famous of puzzle games and it is played alone. Of course, a child will only learn by training with someone who knows how to actually play the puzzle. This mechanical game is a 6-sided cube with 9 stickers on each side representing a solid color. A pivot allows each face to turn and this therefore mixes up the colors. The task is to get all the solid colors back to where they belong. This means each side should only have one color. This is rumored to be the best-selling toy of all time. In fact, 300 million of them were sold by the year 2005! • Tangrams – This puzzle game is unique in the sense that players are to repeat certain shapes by using geometric tiles. The seven flat shapes are called tans. This was originally a Chinese game and the object of the game is to recreate certain shapes by using only the seven pieces that are available to the player. It's a great way to get the imagination going. • Genga – A very modern game, this is fun for the whole family. Genga is a game that consists of many blocks. These blocks are stacked on top of each other very high on a flat surface. The object of the game is to pull out a block one at a time without having the whole structure fall on you. Whoever causes the structure to fall loses the game. This is a game of strategy and suspense and you will be amazed how much fun a family can have spending hours on these simple blocks. |
