Eleven Simple Rules When Playing Boggle

Do you remember the game boggle? The objective of the game is to find words on mixed up dice. Each of the dice has letters on their sides and there are 16 dices in total. The dices are shaken onto a grid and once everything is set, only the letters that are exposed to players are to be used for the game. Players must then make words out of the letters that they see.

It sounds simple but it really isn't. There are rules to follow when playing this fun and educational game. Here are some of the simple ground rules when playing Boggle with your friends.

• Boggle is something like scrabble except that you are not given any tiles and you can make as many words as you want. The scoring comes in later with the person who has the most words winning. Now, the simple rule that is similar in both games is that only permissible words can be used. This means that the words that are seen should also exist in the current English dictionary. It's always best to have a dictionary lying around when playing so that you can judge whether or not a certain word exists or not if it sounds like it's made up.

• Wrong spellings do not count as points for those who make them. So if there are any words that you feel may have been wrongly spelled, look it up in the dictionary.

• Foreign words are not allowed in the game of Boggle. Only English words are allowed unless you are playing a special Boggle game that was made for another country.

• Words that have apostrophes in them are not allowed. However, words that are in their plural form are allowed and this includes words like cats, dogs, rabbits, etc.

• Slang words are not allowed in Boggle and this can't be stressed further enough. You will be surprised to hear that many players insist on certain slang words to be permitted. Even if they are included in the dictionary, keep slang words out of the game of Boggle.

• Abbreviated words are not allowed in this game, only full words. For example, you cannot use the word “Dr” to mean “Doctor.”

• The ultimate goal of the game is to write down as many words as you can on a piece of paper in 90 seconds. Any words written beyond that time limit will not be honored as part of the score.

• Scores are based on the length of words found. 4-letter words are 1 point, 5-letter words are 2 points, etc. A 7-letter word can be worth 4 points.

• You cannot make up words using letters that are not joined together on the board. Letters must be next to each other to make up a whole word.

• Once a game has been finished, that round is considered over and the dice must be mixed again for the next round.

• One player must act as the timer for the game. An easy way to do this so that everyone can enjoy is to use a watch timer instead so that it rings after the 90 seconds has passed.
